\nSupervision and teacher mentoring was my specialization at Haifa University in my M.A degree.
\nThis field is relatively new in education and many update studies are conducted in teaching and teacher education regarding the best model and approach of supervision .
\nAfter reading a big number of studies and professional articles in this subject(e.g.
\nStanulis, Arussell, 2000; Gomez, et al, 2000; Freese, 2006; Day & Leitch, 2001; Orland & Tillema , 2006; Orland , 2006; Goodson & Numan , 2002) and the present summary I came to the conclusion that both top \u2013down and bottom-up models are effective but the context determines what model to adopt and to what extent. What is important is to lead the mentee to learn be equipped with the required skills .successful mentoring process is when the supervisor develop the sense of accountability and ownership amongst his mentees.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"33310892","dateCreated":"1296204830","smartDate":"Jan 28, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"ameenah","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/ameenah","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/racheliprofessorsky.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/33310892"},"dateDigested":1531983786,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Alternative & Collaborative supervision","description":"Dear Racheli,
\nThank you for the comprehensible summary.
\nYour summary has enlightened me regarding the subject of supervising. It was very interesting since I never discussed or read about the different types and models of supervisors.
\nI believe that a combination of Alternative and Collaborative Supervision might be suitable for teachers. The teachers are not dictated what to do but directed, provided with alternatives, and they work in collaboration with the supervisor. But one should note that in certain situations the teachers need a Directive Supervisor. Sometime the teachers are confused and don't know how to act or what to do. Thus, in this case a directive type would be suitable. Throughout my practical training I had a Nondirective supervisor, and I felt that I didn't gain anything from this supervisor. He wouldn't direct me in situations that I really needed it. He didn't give any feedback or any critical remarks or so. I felt lost, didn't actually know if what I did was good. I didn't know what was good, what needs to be improved!
\nThe teachers shouldn't be offended if the supervisor gives certain remarks or directs the teacher, on the contrary the teachers should take in consideration that this supervisor has experience.
\nMaybe the supervisor should do as the teacher in Sohad's article Deciding to teach them all did: to ask positive questions and to approach the teachers positively.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"33215038","dateCreated":"1296069598","smartDate":"Jan 26, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"309923803","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/309923803","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/racheliprofessorsky.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/33215038"},"dateDigested":1531983786,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Manal Khalaila","description":"Dear racheli,
\nthank you for your summary.
\nI think that any supervision that contributes to the teacher's professional development is "good" supervision. I think that the choice of the word "supervision" lends the job a negative sense. Teachers feel that the are watched over in order to be criticized. Therefore, the supervisors themselves should make sure that the method that they use suits the teachers' personalities and not theirs, this is where I disagree with the article.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"33033986","dateCreated":"1295763643","smartDate":"Jan 22, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"Yasmineab","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Yasmineab","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/racheliprofessorsky.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/33033986"},"dateDigested":1531983787,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"The collaborative model","description":"As a coordinator in my school, I follow the third model "the collaborative approach". I don't impose my opinions on other teachers, even the new ones. We hold meetings where we sit and discuss teaching techniques, pedagogical problems ,choice of materials and other topics. We share ideas and also disagreements. We try also to help each other. The one that has helped me and continues to serve me is the self exploratory model. I'm fortunate to work in a team and have great colleagues who are helpful in going over 'bad lessons.' In our team meetings we discuss problems that come up and it's like an on-going supervision where we share and discuss. When an individual brings her problems or teaching weaknesses to the "supervisor" I believe it's easier to accept advice rather than waiting to be told that there is a problem or that she be doing this or that.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"32745770","dateCreated":"1295175646","smartDate":"Jan 16, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"shilomaartje","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/shilomaartje","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/racheliprofessorsky.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/32745770"},"dateDigested":1531983787,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Supernanny","description":"Thanks for your summary Rahelli!
\nI remember how nervous I was prior to the visit of my supervisor, years ago! (And rightly so, it was Penny Ur, no less). Little did I know that supervisors have various theoretical models to work with. I had no idea that there are at least six models of supervision that account for various ways to assess a lesson. As I read about each and every model, I found some logic in all of them. The so called "directive supervision", in which the supervisor more or less dictates what should be done in certain situations, seems certainly the most problematic model in view of its obvious subjectivity. However, we all have blind spots, and this kind of supervision allows the supervisor to address these blind spots without qualms. (Think of the program: "Super-nanny"!) The "alternative", the "collaborative", the "non-directive", the "creative" and the "self-help\/explorative" models appear to be most in touch with modern times because they focus on the positive, don't necessarily seek faults and acknowledge the importance of the learning process of each and every individual. Since teaching and learning are such intricate and multi-leveled processes I agree with you that using a variety of models seems to be the most constructive and thorough thing to do.

In my experience having a supervisor is humiliating. Having someone who is superior to me is not productive. It denotes that I am not a good enough teacher. For me it was not helpful at the time, but I learned that I must improve my teaching in order not to experience it again. I love the collaborative mode since an equal share of ideas may plant new ones. In addition, each teacher may or may not decide on incorporating the ideas, thus keeping the autonomous frame work.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"32637888","dateCreated":"1294933303","smartDate":"Jan 13, 2011","userCreated":{"username":"suedo13","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/suedo13","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/racheliprofessorsky.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/32637888"},"dateDigested":1531983787,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"from susan","description":"Dear Racheli-It was interesting to read about all the various types of supervision modes.
